"...dying ocean, living waters.." 2023
Our oceans are polluted with up to 12 million metric tons of plastic each year. In partnership with the World Economic Forum, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has predicted that by 2050, ocean plastics will outweigh all of the ocean's fish. This project explores the deep need we must adopt if we want a living ocean for our future generations. It examines the future of our oceans if we continue to mindlessly pollute at our current rate.
Santa Monica beach is one of the most visited and polluted beaches in America. Though it is a groomed beach, meaning the city uses a fleet of special machinery in attempts to maintain trash and natural debris each week, we have been collecting plastics and garbage all within 10 feet of the shoreline– all destined to become ocean pollution.
We found this water bottle, and sourced the seaweed, sand, and ocean water within those same 10 feet of the shoreline. This plastic now houses a continually decaying ocean inside. With inaction, this visceral image reflects the lifeless future of our ocean.
2050 is only 27 years away.
